When it comes to fishing, many anglers are particular about where they fish. Crowds are a constant cause of heartburn for many fishermen. Because crowds can spoil a fishing trip, many anglers go to great lengths and great expenses to get away from the crowds by planning elaborate remote fishing trips. But there is an easier way to get into the backcountry and fish more remote waters close to home, and this is a method worth reading more about below.

Backpacking is an inexpensive and excellent method for getting away from the crowds at local fishing hotspots. Hiking is a cheap form of transportation that only requires your leg energy to move you from one place to another. Hiking is not only a way to get away from the crowds, but is a great form of exercise. It also allows you to enjoy nature firsthand. Lets look at how hiking and backpacking can take you to remote waters, and what you need to bring along.

Say there is a river that has a few popular fishing holes. The river is fed by a high mountain lake that is full of natural fish. The lake is only accessible by a rough trail that follows the river. Lets also say that the mountain lake is a good 2 day hike. This is a prime example of a way for a backpacker to get away from the crowded fishing holes at more accessible points on the river. Plan a backpacking trip along the river to the high mountain lake. Hiking along the river serves a few purposes for backpackers. First, you will have a steady supply of water that can be filtered. Second, you will have immediate access to fishing from the trail. You don't have to spend time fishing unproductive holes. You can cast a few times into a hole, and if there isn't a strike, you can move up the trail looking for more promising fishing spots.

Backpacking, especially if it involves multiple days, requires careful planning and packing. Heavy and bulky fishing gear wont fit and should not be brought along. That is where a high quality collapsible fishing rod and reel comes into play. These can be break apart models or telescoping fishing rod combos. They are light weight and easy to setup, allowing you to fish from the trail and when you reach your final fishing destination. Don't discount the gear you bring with you. High quality gear is important to your ability to catch fish in the backcountry.

Good luck planning your backpacking fishing trip.
