Lake Guntersville, in northern Alabama, regularly draws bass fishermen who are eager to try their luck. The scenic lake stretches over 75 miles from Nickajack Dam to Guntersville Dam on the Tennessee River. Its 900 miles of shoreline make the lake popular with boaters and fishermen. Lake Guntersville is known as one of the best bass fishing lakes in the Southeast.

A number of bass tournaments are scheduled on Lake Guntersville each spring. Both professional and amateur tournaments are popular. The events range from smaller local and regional tournaments to national tournaments. Here are the highlights from some of the upcoming spring tournaments.

The Rat-L-Trap Classic will be held on March 24. This is a team tournament, and anglers are required to use Bill Lewis Rat-L-Trap lures. Boats will launch out of Goose Pond Colony, a beautiful lakeside resort owned by the City of Scottsboro, Alabama.

The McDonald’s Big Bass Splash is scheduled for March 31-April 1. This is an amateurs’ only fishing tournament sponsored by Sealy Outdoors, the producer of some of the largest amateur fishing tournaments. The tournament will launch out of Goose Pond Colony Marina in Scottsboro. An entry fee is required, and there is a guaranteed payout of over $150,000 in cash and prizes. First place overall finisher in the tournament will win a 2012 Legend Bass Boat, and there are hourly cash prizes. The event also includes an outdoor expo and a young anglers fishing contest.

The Lake Guntersville BFL Bass Fishing Tournament will also take place on March 31. The BFL is the country’s largest weekend bass fishing circuit. This tournament will use the ramp at the Val-Monte Lakeside Resort and Marina in Guntersville, Alabama.

Xtreme Bass Series Tournaments are scheduled monthly this spring out of the Goose Pond Colony Marina. Upcoming dates are March 25, April 15, and May 20. One and two person teams may compete. An American Bass Anglers Couples Tournament- Alabama Central Division is scheduled for April 21 out of the Val-Monte Resort. Teams are composed of a male and female member, and the minimum age is 14. Teams fish together throughout the year to qualify for the Championship Tournament. A NE Alabama Division Fishers of Men Tournament is scheduled for May 26. This Legacy Series event is made up of two person adult/junior teams. The adult team member must be age 19 or older. This tournament will also be run out of the Val-Monte Lakeside Resort in Guntersville.

Scenic Lake Guntersville is Alabama’s largest lake and one of its most popular recreational lakes. Anglers who want to fish on their own will find plenty of free public boat ramps and private marinas on the lake.
